Which Diamond Alternative is Most Diamond Like?

with 94 Comments

There are so many cool diamond alternatives available now, and we will see more coming to market this year. Clients are asking us on a daily basis, which stone is the best? Which one is most diamond-like? Is Charles & Colvard's Forever One the best diamond alternative? Or a NEO moissanite? How about the SUPERNOVA from Australia? When can I get an Amora Gem? And really, what the frick is a Lustour?

With spending more time evaluating each type of stone over the last few weeks, (some of which we've been familiar with for years) we have discovered that there is no one brand of stone that is always better overall than the others. Answer a few easy questions for us, and we can steer you to the best stone for you. All of the stones we sell are very diamond-like, and will fool nearly anyone (remind me to tell you the story about the diamond dealers in Cancun). And seriously, some of it truly is just personal preference.

What is your fav cut (shape)?

What is the carat size of your dreams?

Do you have a color preference? D? G-H?

Sparkle bomb vs most diamond-like? Both?!

Once we know the answers to these questions, we will offer our thoughts on which stone(s) would be the best fit. Usually an Instagram video or 2 is in order, so you can really see what we are talking about, so typically we will send you a few to look at, to help you decide. We are putting together a comprehensive summary and chart of the gems we sell in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here's a short summary. Stones are listed in order of price, with NEO being the most affordable, and Amora Gem the most.

NEO MOISSANITE

These beauties are fairly new to market, as of the October 2015. They began with a round cut, now they are expanding their line to nearly all shapes! Hello trillion! They have made great strides with their cut (cut is key, my friends), and now have an ideal cut round. We are waiting on samples of several fancy shapes, to make sure they are amazing - if they are anything like this NEO cushion cut we saw in Vegas, well, YUM. Look for Instagram vids and blog posts here once we get 'em. The NEO is the most affordable stone we sell, they have a cool ass name, and come with a comprehensive warranty.

SUPERNOVA MOISSANITE

The SUPERNOVA is a brand new moissanite on the market. We are the first retailer to sell them, on the entire planet. Yup. #MotherEarth They are gorgeous, and colorless. All of them. And they come in a ridiculous range of sizes. From wee lil bits, to kinda huge and beyond. All colorless. So how about a 5 carat cushion? Or a 6.5 carat emerald cut? Or perhaps a 20 carat round? Mm-hmm. Read all about the delicious new SUPERNOVA.

NEO moissanite, tools

FOREVER ONE MOISSANITE

Charles & Colvard rolled out the new asscher cut Forever One moissanite in Vegas, at the JCK Vegas gem show. Wow! They've also expanded their Forever One line of rounds and cushions (yay!) - meaning many new sizes are available. All C&C's moissanite come with a limited lifetime warranty.

LUSTOUR

Is a curious new stone that we discovered at JCK Vegas - from what we've seen so far, they are gorgeous. We are doing some messing around with them, and a bit of research before officially adding them to our line - our Director of Ops reached out to some professors at Penn State this week, to get a scientist's opinion on these beautiful gems. Since there isn't much info out there about them, we really wanted to do some digging. We aren't lovin' their cushion cut, but their rounds, emeralds, princess and squares all look fab. The emerald cuts are particularly exciting, as we've been waiting for a delicious colorless emerald cut for too long! We are waiting on a radiant cut sample to play with, so we'll let you know on those. They are also available in colors. Lustour stones come with a lifetime warranty.

UPDATE: We are not going to be selling the Lustour, at least for now. With the number of other stones that we are rolling out, we just aren't able to get set up to carry their line of stones as well. We may revisit it in the next year or 2, and if we do, we'll keep you posted.

AMORA GEM

In most shapes, at least of the older cuts, the amora gem is beautiful, but they are behind on production and we aren't sure when we'll be able to get more stones. Although we never loved their larger carat sizes, they were really beautiful up to around 2.75 carats, then they went a bit flat. They are in the midst of updating ALL of their cuts - rounds and all fancy shapes - and are using a gem-cutting robot called the TIGER for a more precise cut and polish, so we will see what happens with those once they begin rolling them out. Amora gems are the most expensive diamond alternative we sell, and pricing may change (up is a safe assumption) as we begin to see the new cuts come to market, haven't heard any news on that as of yet. Amora gem does not come with a warranty.

JHD will steer you to the proper stone just for you - if you'd like a certain cut and carat size in a particular stone, and we don't feel that is the best, most beautiful or diamond-like version of that cut, we will tell you. Stick with us, folks, good things are a comin'...

hi! first of all, i just wanted to say how much i LOVE your instagram feed. you make some seriously beautiful rings!!! now I have a question. I’m seriously considering a moissanite stone but before i officially decide I was wondering if you could shed some knowledge. I was looking at a princess/square cut at around 2 to 3 carats set in a plain yellow gold band. Would you still recommend a moissanite? And since they don’t make a forever one that big, would forever brilliant be okay? or should I maybe look at something like a neo moissanite or an amora gem?

    • Hey Madeline – Thank you very much! *blushes* You are too sweet! I wouldn’t recommend a square FB moissanite, they never got a good color on that cut. You are right, the largest F1 moissy I can get is 2.1 carats. BUT – good news – there are some new moissanites coming out. The NEO and the Supernova. I’m waiting on samples of them from 2 diff distributors. Both will have larger squares to choose from! Amora gems are near impossible to get lately, it’s so frustrating. If you’d prefer an amora, I could add you to our stone wait list, no deposit needed, and I’d reach out when one comes in stock. They aren’t cutting squares yet, so it could be a while – they are focusing on rounds, and then supposedly emerald cuts, as they got some good rough that would lend itself to the emerald shape. Hope this helps!

Okay, awesome! Thank you so much for replying!!! Do you happen to know approximately when the NEO or the Supernova will be available?

        • It depends on the cut and size. Once I get the samples of the Supernova and evaluate them, I can start ordering stones right away. The NEO has a few cuts available already – I just ordered a 3.3 carat cushion cut for another client. In the NEO, the different cuts and sizes will probably trickle in, but if you let me know what you are looking for, I can make a request or add you to our stone wait list, or both!

Hi Jen, if you wouldn’t recommend square because of color, what about the emerald cut FB? I am in love with your Kennedy ring.

    • I love the Kennedy, too! It’s gorgeous, very elegant.

Emerald cut FB’s are really hard to get. They are a pretty good color, but I’ll have way better options very soon! Both the NEO and Supernova moissanite have a near colorless and colorless emerald cut. I’m waiting on samples of both. Prices are also lower than FB and F1! Oh, and the Lustour, too! Also colorless, more expensive than F1, and we are waiting on a laser test results to come back. The emerald cut Lustour I put in a ring to bang around has held up rather nicely. I don’t like all of their cuts, but their emeralds are great.

Thanks for your quick response. I must be honest though I am not a fan of colorless stones. I am the owner of 2 moissanite rings. One has a FB and the other Forever One. To me the Forever One looks white, similar to a CZ. I love my FB solitaire but Im worried about getting the Kennedy with FB if you think the other stones may be a better option. Maybe I will wait to see with the other options will look like. Thanks so much.Im a huge fan of your rings and a moissanite lover!

    • Ah! Then you may want to consider a NEO. They are G-H in color, so in between the Forever One and the Forever Brilliant. Perfect compromise. F1 is an E-F, and FB an I-J. Aww, thank you! I’m a moissanite lover too! *grin*

Hi Jen, I am in love with an Emerald cut, and still debating which one to get. Amora gem, F1 or supernova? I like a colorless stone and one that looks very diamond like. Any suggestions? Thanks! I love all your postings!

Hi Gina! Well I can narrow that down for ya very nicely. Supernova is the stone for you. There is no Forever One emerald cut, and Amora gem may cut them, but I don’t know when. We have a waitlist of over 50 people, nearly all are waiting for an AG in some cut or another. They are cutting rounds right now, probably cushions next, then I heard princess cuts, but no news on an emerald. See, easy! lol Thanks for the compliment, I’m glad you like our posts! We try to keep it casual ’round here. It’s more fun that way. 😀

Hi Jen! I’m looking for an asscher cut option in the under 1.5 carat range but it seems that there isn’t much information out there on these newly released stones. I’ve been browsing options for the Forever One, Amora Ultra, and now the Supernova! I’ve heard some comments about how the asscher is cut differently than diamonds and some opinions were to stay away from step-cuts because of this. What is your opinion? Who does it best?

Hi Jen! Thank you for your amazing posts on Instagram! I love all the benefits of moissanite and Amora gems but I find that they’re too sparkly to pass off as a diamond. I have seen on Etsy some Lannyte diamond simulants and was wondering what your thoughts are about them vs moissanites. I am looking for a classic round brilliant gem about 8-9mm set in platinum with a cathedral setting and diamond and blue sapphires on the sides. I also would like it to be able to accommodate a wedding band to sit flush to the engagement ring. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thank you, Jen!

      | Reply

Hey Crystal! Oh sure! So glad you find our posts helpful. 😀 I’d stay away from the Lannyte simulants, they are a coated CZ, that won’t last. If you don’t love the crazy sparkle of most moissanites, maybe the diamond cut NEO moissanite is the way to go – it was developed to minimize light dispersion, which cuts down on the disco-ball effect that some don’t like in Charles & Colvard’s stones.

Hi Jen, Another Asscher question. I’m looking for a 2.5 -3.0 ct (as I know the cut will make it appear a bit smaller than a round) moissanite. I’m aware the moissanites are cut different than diamonds. Would you say they are cut more like the original or the royal Asscher diamond? Also, which company would you recommend for a more diamond like colorless, but not glass like look, the F1, Supernova, or Neo? Oh and can I expect a stone of this size to be heavy like a CZ? Thanks, Dorothy

    • Jen Hollywood-Showell
      | Reply

Sure. Yes, moissanite is cut differently than a diamond. It depends on which brand you go with, we have videos of both on our Instagram. The NEO isn’t cutting an asscher, at least yet. The F1 asscher is very white, supernova not quite as white, prob a G, at least the ones I’ve seen, so that would be my recommendation on a near colorless asscher. Moissanite is not as heavy as a CZ, so no worries there. They are just a bit lighter than a diamond, that is why you see moissanite posted with “carat equivalent” weight.

Hi! I was wondering which you recommended for a princess cut 1-2 carat, completely colorless, most diamond like?

Would you respond the same if I said both sparkle bomb and most diamond like?

    • Jen Hollywood-Showell
      | Reply

Hi! Absolutely. So in a square/princess cut, it’s a bit tricky. If you want colorless and a sparkle bomb, I’d suggest Forever One. Their largest carat size is 1.75, though, not sure what size you were thinking about. If you wanted near colorless, I’d suggest SUPERNOVA, and they have tons of sizes, up to really huge. They are still fine tuning their square cut, but the sample I have is great. Both stones are very diamond-like in their behavior, so all good there. The NEO guys are still working on getting a delicious square. Square cuts are a big challenge in moissanite – to get beautiful faceting and a good white color is very tricky.

      • Ms
        | Reply

So if I didn’t mind the sparkle bomb then go with F1? But if I want more like a diamond then go with supernova? And stay completely away from NEO??

        • Jen Hollywood-Showell
          | Reply

There is no NEO square, at least yet. Supernova has faceting more like a typical princess cut diamond, but they aren’t as white. If colorless is your most important criteria, F1 is the way to go. Hope that helps!

    Hi Jen!
Im looking for a round 8mm (2carat) that would sit in a solitaire tiffany type setting. I want it to be colourless and as diamond like as possible. I was originally looking at the Amora Gem, but it’s impossible to get and it’s quite pricey too. I was looking at the Hearts and Arrows moissanite as an option. Any opinions about that? Would that be better than the F1? Also, do you know anything about this new gem on the market called Diamonna? It claims to be the most diamond like gem on the market with the most perfect hearts and arrows and also the highet content of carbon on the market?

    Thanks Jen!

    • Jen Hollywood-Showell
      | Reply

Hi! I don’t love H&A moissanite, gotta be honest, but it’s a personal preference thing. Our most diamond-like round is the NEO diamond cut, the cut was developed to minimize light dispersion, which cuts down on the disco-ball effect that some don’t like in other brands of moissanite.

On the Diamonna, I’ve done some research, it seems like they are trying to be the next amora gem, esp with those higher prices (yikes), but it’s made from SiC, same as moissanite. Highest content of carbon? lol

Hey Megan! Ah yes, the elusive amora gem. So frustrating, right? We’ve been suggesting our NEO moissanite, in a round or cushion. The cut and clarity on them is ridiculous. And in the round there are 2 cuts to choose from, one is more of a sparkle bomb and the other is their diamond cut, which has less of the disco-ball effect that some don’t like in other brands of moissanite.

Hi, Jen! I apologize for bothering you, but I have a couple questions maybe you could answer.

    1) I’m interested in a moissanite, but I don’t really want a lot of the rainbow disco ball effect. Which cut would minimize that effect?

    2) I’m interested in a 1.5 carat (7.5 mm) round cut because it is classic and timeless, and a 7.5 mm equivalent cushion/elongated cushion cut, however I’m also considering a radiant cut too! What cut do.you suggest would be best? I’m leaning more towards a rectangular or square shape, but I’m afraid because they don’t appear “large” for their carat size (for example comparing a 1.5 c round vs a 1.5 c cushion). ):

    • Jen Hollywood-Showell
      | Reply

It’s no bother! Our NEO diamond cut round was developed to minimize light dispersion, which cuts down on the disco-ball effect that some don’t like in other brands of moissanite. If you’d like a radiant cut, we like the NEO but are low on stock right now, I’m waiting for some Forever One radiant cuts to arrive. On the elongated cushion, ZAYA is our only option – ZAYA is all specialty cuts.

A 1.5 ct cushion cut looks smaller than a 1.5 carat round, because they have a big ass. lol Check out Instagram for a series of B&W photos I did recently, they show different carat sizes compared on my hand. https://www.instagram.com/jhollywooddesigns/

Hey Sandra! Forever Brilliant moissanite is pretty warm, if you want a whiter stone I’d recommend the diamond cut NEO. Their near colorless stone is gorgeous and very diamond-like. Our moissanite man developed that cut to minimize light dispersion, which cuts down on the disco-ball effect that some don’t like in other brands of moissanite. On a rose gold setting, no worries there, the rose gold contrasts beautifully with our gorgeous NEOs. See here – https://www.instagram.com/p/BO2DQwPBOVT/?taken-by=jhollywooddesigns

Hi Jen! I love this blog; it’s such an amazing resource! I’m positive I want a moissanite e-ring, and I think I want an elongated cushion cut (runners up are radiant and emerald cut) in the equivalent of 3+ carats. I know you’ve said some of the stones go flat in larger sizes, but it seems like there might be hope for the elongated cushion? I’m not sure what other terms to tell Boyfriend to be on the lookout for. Fiery stones are fine, but I don’t like the milky, almost opalescent look that some moissanites have. Does that mean I want near-colorless, not colorless? Or is that a clarity/quality thing? Also, I haven’t had a chance to compare in person, but I thiiink I’d like the “crushed ice” facets better than the starburst facets that some moissanites have. Dare I ask how long the wait is for such a stone, currently? Thanks so much!

Thank you so much! So happy you are digging our site. 😀 It was more the amora gems that I felt went a bit flat and glassy in the larger sizes, moissanite doesn’t do that. See, this is My Precious, and she’s 7.75 carats of yum, still crazy high clarity and depth. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNKsJElhD7c/?taken-by=jhollywooddesigns

On your questions about the opalescent look – shoot us an email with an example, I’m curious if it’s more related to the lighting in the video/photos you saw.

In an e-cushion, ZAYA moissanite is your only option, of those that we carry, and we are only selling colorless stones. Quirkier cuts like that warm the stone up JUST a smidge, as in, an F or so, so you get a gorgeous stone that isn’t too white. We can get near colorless ZAYAs, but they are warmer than our near colorless NEOs, so I only suggest those if you are cool with a warmer stone. lol

Hi Jen, I came across your website when researching the new brands of moissanite that have ben released, its been really helpful!

I’ve been looking at getting 1.5ct oval moissanite set in yellow gold for a while now and with all the new kinds around I was wondering which you’d suggest? I’ve seen videos of the F1 and love the rainbows but am not sure if it would be too icy against the yellow gold. I also live in AUS and love the fact we have our own moissanite here now too!

Rebecca! So glad you found us, and having fun learning about moissanite on our site. 😀 Our NEO ovals are gorgeous, I’m waiting for more of them to come in, and our ZAYA ovals are beautiful, too. Both NEO and ZAYA have a bit less of the rainbow fire I find.

Hi Jen, thanks for the reply! How do the ZAYA and NEO compare to the SUPERNOVA and Forever One? Are there any differences in cut or colour, or anything else that makes them unique?

    Hello Jen,
I am looking for a 1.5 to a 2 carat round diamond I tend to like the oec. I like my diamond with a hint of yellow to it and I really would like it set in 18k yellow gold. Also I don’t like the very skinny bands I like a thicker band but not to think and I do like the rounded bands no knife cut. Can be a solitaire or have diamonds on the side however I worry if because I like a diamond with a hint of yellow I loved he k or L leaning more towards an L on a real diamond and love the oec felt would it look stupid next to the very white side diamonds? Please help

  31. Hey Tara Ann! We can cut you an OEC in colorless or near colorless, in our ZAYA moissanite. Take a peek at the rings in our Etsy shop for setting inspiration, I bet we have something you will love. We choose side stones to match your center, so no worries there. 🙂

A zaya really? I was loving the supernova and the neo

  33. If you like an OEC cut, ZAYA is your only option. NEO has 2 round cuts, but not an OEC. Supernova has one, no OEC cut. The older cuts are harder to find.

Do you have a picture of the oec zaya cut so I can get an idea?

Hi Jen! I’m loving all of the honest opinions and information you’re sharing!!! I’m looking for an elongated cushion/pillow cut/radiant shaped moissanite…. I stumbled across Harro, how do these stones compare to forever one/Neo/Zamora? Looking for a white, bright, sparkle bomb! I’m liking their jubilee and crushed ice cuts! They don’t seem to have much reviews yet. Thanks!!!

Hiya Nicole! Thank you! We love teaching our peeps about moissanite. *grin* We evaluated Harro, they cut a pretty stone, but decided to directly source our own line of custom cut stones instead. If you’d like an elongated cushion or one like their jubilee cushion, we can cut those for ya in our ZAYA line of moissanite. Someone else asked for that funky cushion recently, and our cutters can pull it off, no prob.

Hi Jen! I heard that Moissanite&Co’s H&A stones are the best diamond lookalikes for the round cuts. How do NEO moissanites compare? Thank you!

  37. Jen Hollywood-Showell

NEO has them beat. Our diamond cut round is a subtle H&A cut, and with the way the faceting was designed to minimize light dispersion, the stones don’t have as much of that disco-ball fire you commonly see in a moissanite – end result – a more diamond-like stone. *dropsmic*

Hi Jen! First of all, it’s been a lucky St Patrick’s day for me for sure finding your blog and then your instagram page, which I just followed! My boyfriend and I have been looking at rings for a couple of months now and I decided on a gorgeous Tacori setting which doesn’t leave much room in the budget for a nice diamond, so I decided that I want a diamond simulant until we can afford a nice diamond center stone… or just keep the simulant forever. 🙂 I am looking for a 2 carat, colorless round brilliant stone. I don’t like the disco-ball fire and I want a stone that looks the most like an actual diamond. I first started looking at the Forever One H&A, then I was looking into an Amora Gem, but after reading your blog, it seems like a diamond cut round NEO would be my best option? Does it come colorless with this option?

Thanking you in advance for your time and for your honest and expert opinion!

Hi Kim! It IS your lucky day! lol We often have people set our stones in designer settings, and no one will ever guess it’s not a diamond. Yes, I’d recommend our diamond cut NEO, and we can get colorless stones, I have several in stock. They are 8mm across, and 1.9 carats. Next size up is 2.2 carats. Email us or shoot over an Etsy message for more details and pricing. I’d show ya a video, but it seems like you likely saw several on our IG already. *grin* Happy St. Pat’s Day!

    Hi Jen,
Nice site and etsy shop you have! I previously had a 1.8 ct center cushion cut forever brilliant moissanite in a micro pave halo setting. However, It was stolen!! I loved my ring, but the only thing I didn’t like was the rainbow colors and thAt it had a yellow hue. This time I am looking for a moissanite that has less rainbow effect and is colorless. I would like it to look more like a diamond. I would like a princess cut or a cushion. I have been doing a lot of research and I’m thinking about either the forever one or the NEO. Which one is best? Or do you recommend a different one based on the information I have provided? I still would like a 1.2ct to 1.5. I don’t know if I want to go bigger than that and no smaller. Thank you for your time and your expertise!!

Hey Cheryl! Thank you so much! *grin* I’m so sorry your ring was stolen, we hear that all too often. Our NEOs are faceted to minimize light dispersion, so they kick out less of that rainbow fire. So do our ZAYA moissanite, a new line of stones that we are selling, that we sourced ourselves directly. I can get 1 carat NEO squares right now, they are gorgeous. If you want to go larger, the ZAYA cuts a beautiful square as well. Our NEO cushion is stunning, and we have lots of those in stock in a 1.3 carat, next size down is 1 and next size up is 1.7, so 1.3 might be just perfect for you.

    Hi ,

I was wondering, do moissanites tend to get cloudy over time? or develop a tint? Also, I’ve heard that Harro gems have a more clouded appearance, do you have any knowledge of if this is true?

Also, i love elongated rings (i.e. elongated cushion or oval), which would you recommend to have a cut which looks most similar to diamond of these shapes

    Thanks!

Hiya Allie! They do not, but both our NEO and ZAYA moissanite come with a warranty that covers that, if it were to happen. We evaluated Harro gems, they cut a pretty stone, but we decided to source our stones directly, and thus the ZAYA was born. Harro does a crushed ice look sometimes I think, maybe that is what they are referring to?

You could honestly get away with either, both are very diamond-like, it’s truly personal preference! Go with your first instinct, if you aren’t sure about your fav cut. *grin*

Hello Jen! Thank you for being so awesome and offering up this platform for questions and guidance! I am already in the works of purchasing a ring but would like another jeweler’s opinion on the center stone. I have heard that the Forever One colorless looks more diamond like than the Supernova. But, seeing as I am getting a pear cut, I did some research and found a few blogs saying they preferred the pear cut in the Supernova over the Forever One. They stated it didn’t have as many “bow ties” as the Forever One. What is your opinion on the pear cut of these two??

  44. Jen Hollywood-Showell
    | Reply

Hey Ness! Oh sure! We love teaching our peeps about moissanite. The F1 does have a fair bit of a bow tie, they aren’t my fav pear. A bow tie is a dark bow tie shaped area across the center of the stone, common in pears and ovals. My fav pears are NEO and ZAYA, ZAYA is the only one I can get ya right now if you were interested, we are waiting for a NEO re-stock on fancy cuts in the coming weeks. I evaluated the SN pear cuts many months ago, they were pretty, but again, not my fav. Pear cuts are really tricky, to get a beautiful result from the moissanite crystal. You get a nicer transition from the wider end to the narrow if you go 1mm wider, so a 10×8 instead of the typical 10×7. I can only get a wider pear in the ZAYA, for the moment, as they custom cut stones for us.

Hi Jen! Do you happen to carry any moissanites with the crushed ice look? I know HarroGem has it, but they don’t post enough info and side-by-side comparisons online for me to be comfortable with going with them. Sometimes their stones in the video look cloudy, or they would do comparisons against poor quality diamonds, which isn’t fair.

    • Jen Hollywood-Showell
      | Reply

We do! In our ZAYA Moissanite. They may have mentioned/compared crushed ice cuts to lower quality diamonds, because that is where that type of cut came from. It’s a way to disguise inclusions and carbon spots in a diamond. But people are used to seeing them, and they’ve gotten popular. You don’t get as much fire and brilliance out of the moissanite when they are cut in that fashion, but it’s a total personal preference thing, ya know?

Do the cushion cut NEOs have the same, no so much a disco ball, effect also? I have a 1.4 fb cushion in a rose gold setting with the goal of passing it as a diamond…but it doesnt look like a diamond to me! I know the round cuts are more like diamonds, just wasnt sure about cushion

Our NEO cushions are gorg! And very diamond-like, not a lot of rainbow flash. You don’t feel your FB looks like a diamond because of the cut, color or something else?
